Honda does subtle and cool

HONDA’S primped Accord has been on sale since July, with a lower-emission diesel to attract company drivers and others afflicted by high carbon emissions. It received subtle exterior changes including new headlamps, now with a cornering function, a revised facial grille, near rear lamps and more comfortable suspension.

Seen here is the 2.2 i-DTEC type S ADAS (sic) in basque red with black leather seats. This saloon costs £31,725 – which is serious money for a car your neighbours will hardly notice. Maybe that’s the cool thing about an Accord, because on the road this car is a gem.

The 2.2 diesel produces 177.5 brake horse power and 280 lb ft of torque. This latter figure gives it dazzling in-gear acceleration, but quietly and smoothly.

The six-speed gearbox is operated by an old-school small gear lever which was in just the right place for me.

Honda was later than most to make a diesel engine. The latest tune gives 50mpg and a CO2 rating of 147g/km.

HONDA ACCORD: A gem on the road with smooth acceleration.
