Now’s the smart time to buy a car

GLASS’S says now is the right time to buy a car, whether new or used. Why? Most buy­ers don’t come out of hi­ber­na­tion un­til the early spring.

This means Jan­uary – a tra­di­tion­ally quiet pe­riod for car sales – can be the per­fect time to look for a good deal with deal­ers likely to wel­come you with open arms. The ex­cep­tion is the 4x4, in de­mand af­ter a run of white win­ters.

SEAT be­gins its 2012 with “best-ever” of­fers on the Ibiza, which may be suf­fer­ing from de­mand for its sis­ter, the VW Polo. A dis­count of £2,310 off the Ibiza SC 1.4 16V SE Copa brings its price down to £9,995. while sim­i­lar dis­counts off the cor­re­spond­ing Ibiza 5dr and Ibiza ST mod­els see their prices slashed to just £10,495 and £11,205 re­spec­tively. The Golf-sized Leon has sav­ings up to £3,085.

HONDA starts its year by of­fer­ing in­cen­tives on the Jazz, CR-V or In­sight. The of­fers in­clude four years’ free ser­vic­ing with road­side as­sis­tance and a zero de­posit fi­nance plan – the first from Honda. Its big news is the ar­rival of the lat­est Swin­don­built Civic.

GER­MANY’S pres­tige tyre­maker, Con­ti­nen­tal, has an­nounced tyres spe­cific to elec­tric ve­hi­cles. The Conti. econ­tact has “ex­cep­tion­ally low rolling re­sis­tance lev­els and low noise out­puts, whilst cop­ing with the torque gen­er­ated by an elec­tric ve­hi­cle,” says Con­ti­nen­tal. The first size is for a 13-inch wheel.

VOLVO’S re­cov­ery con­tin­ues, with a 20 per cent in­crease in sales of 449,255 last year. It po­si­tions it­self as the “fastest grow­ing lux­ury car maker.” Sales in China (home to Volvo’s owner) soared by 54 per cent.
