Citroën fans rally round for French collection
THE 15th International Citroën Car Club rally is being held this weekend at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate. It is the world’s largest Citroën gathering, founded in 1973 and visiting Britain in 1976.
It last “met” in Britain in 1984 and this year will be the biggest collection of Citroëns ever gathered under one “roof” in the UK. Lots of unusual Citroëns are present, including some from the Citroën Conservatoire museum at the Paris Citroën factory. Citroën UK is showing 11 classics from its collection. Examples include the adventurous Maseratiengined SM and what many regard as the most important car of the 20th century, the fabulous DS. There will also be Panhards on show, an historic brand taken over by Citroën in the 1960s. At the show you can see its illustrious and interesting past.
The Traction Avant was the world’s mass-produced first front-wheel-drive car with a monocoque body. Its expense ruined Citroën, which was taken over by Michelin. In the mid 1970s, it was taken over by Peugeot. Today it dominates the World Rally Championship and its DS range of designs is finding new customers. Allez Citroën.
CLASSIC: The Citroën DS.
