Land Rover pins its colours to the mast as race sponsor
LAND Rover’s three-year global sponsorship of the Extreme Sailing Series has been signed at a special ceremony in Qingdao, China.
The event was marked by the unveiling of the Land Rover-branded Extreme 40 Catamaran, the livery for which was created by the Land Rover design team.
The Extreme 40 will be used as a viewing platform for Land Rover customers to get as close as possible to the racing action. In addition, it will give Land Rover the potential to enter the circuit later this year with a professional Race Team as a “wildcard entry”.
Now in its seventh year, the Extreme Sailing Series is contested by a fleet of Extreme 40 Catamarans. The Series takes place in eight events – called Acts – staged in locations across the globe. Each Act takes place over four days and can include match racing, fleet racing, straight line duels and speed trials.
By way of a fun comparison, Land Rover has come up with some similarities and differences between the catamaran and the all-new Range Rover Sport.
The Extreme 40 is a oneoff design constructed from carbon fibre tipping the scales at 1,250kg, while the Range Rover Sport has lightweight aluminium architecture weighing in at 2,330kg .
The car is powered by a 5.0 litre 510ps, supercharged V8 engine with a limited top speed of 155mph; the catamaran is driven by a main sail of 75msq with a top speed of 46mph.
Nought to 60mph has been measured on the Range Rover Sport at less than five seconds. The Extreme 40 takes six seconds to reach 23mph.
The turning circle on the Range Rover is 12.3metres while that of the catamaran is a very competitive 15 metres.
Seating numbers 5 + 2 in the car and 5+1 on board, with the +1 being a guest sailor.
Mark Cameron of Land Rover, who christened the catamaran, said: “It is fitting to begin this sponsorship in China as it is Land Rover’s largest single market for new vehicle sales and is at the centre of our global strategy. We have always considered the sport of sailing and the philosophy of Land Rover go hand in hand.”
TO THE EXTREME: Land Rover is the new sponsor of the Extreme Sailing Series, and has launched an all-new Range Rover Sport, above.
