Big Brother inside little black box
TELEMATICS may well prove to be the 21st century’s automotive Big Brother, tracking every move whether we like it or not.
Everything from driving speed to fuel performance can be tracked with telematics and some companies are using it as a means of reducing insurance premiums.
The GPS in the little black telematics box enables insurers to track your vehicle’s movements and assess your driving ability – acceleration, braking and cornering can all be monitored. On the plus side, having that little black box in the car adds an antitheft tracking device.
There are telematics smartphone apps that can collect driver data and reduce insurance costs. Some allow data to be collected without the need for a black box to be installed.
