Low emissions and plenty of space add to Leon’s appeal
REVVING up, ready to roll into the showrooms this month is the new Leon ST from the Spanish SEAT brand which nestles comfortably under the Volkswagen umbrella.
This third-generation estate has a number of appealing aspects, not least of which is the price which starts at £16,675. Load-lugging too is likely to attract buyers. The more than adequate 587l boot expands to 1,470lwith the seats down – a manoeuvre readily achieved via neat handles in the boot – a simple tug drops the seat backs to the floor.
Engine options include three petrols – 1.2l, 1.4 l and 1.8l – as well as two versions of the 1.6l diesel – a standard 102 bhp and an Ecomotive – plus two 2.0l units.
As always with SEAT/VW, the range of transmissions offered is hard to beat. Five/ six-speed manuals and a choice of either the excellent VW six or seven-speed DSG automatic are all on the list.
The Ecomotive version is also likely to attract plenty of interest being the lowestemitting Leon ever made, with a CO2 rating of 87g/km. Fuel consumption is officially rated at 85mpg combined which makes its theoretical tank range a shade over 940 miles.
Changes over the standard Leon for the Ecomotive include a specially adapted six-speed manual transmission, the addition of low rolling resistance tyres and optimised aerodynamics, comprising lowered suspension, closed-off cooling apertures at the front, additional under-body panels, a roof spoiler, and rear screen side spoilers.
Anyone with two minutes to spare might like to access the SEAT video which condenses the entire build time of a new Leon ST range into just a couple of minutes, filmed right at the heart of the Martorell production lines.
Anorak information includes the fact that the award-winning factory currently produces ten SEAT models on four different platforms, built by 10,000 employees and more than 2,800 robots, at a rate of 2,000 cars per day.
In addition, a Leon ST comprises 5,900 separate parts and 1,580 metres of cable and takes 19 hours to build from scratch.
OPEN UP: The new SEAT Leon ST estate boasts a boot which can easily be expanded to 1,470l with the seats down.
