Nis­san Qashqai. The name: An Ira­nian eth­nic group. Pro­nounced ‘cashkye’ aka ‘cash-cow’ for Nis­san’s cof­fers.

The ve­hi­cle: Roomy. Five doors, five seats. Most are front wheel drive but 4x4 is avail­able on two ver­sions. Three en­gine op­tions, four main trim lev­els.

Made in: Sun­der­land and largely an English-cumNis­san-Europe cre­ation.

Prices: £17,595 (113bhp 1.2 petrol turbo Visia) to £27,845 (1.6 diesel 4x4 Tekna). A 148bhp 1.2 petrol en­gine ar­rives in Au­tumn.

Diesel: From £19,290 for the 108bhp 1.5 Visia.

Nis­san: Turn­ing 80 this year. It is by far the big­gest UK car pro­ducer, with nearly 118,000 sales last year. In the pipe­line this year: a Fo­cus-sized hatch from Barcelona, an elec­tric NV200 van and an up­date on the GTR su­per-coupé.

Verdict: A great all­rounder for fam­ily mo­tor­ing.
