European debut for new Subaru sports saloon
THE much anticipated Subaru WRX STI sports saloon made its European debut at the 84th Geneva International Motor Show this week, bringing it one step closer to the UK.
But don’t expect to buy one straight off the shelf. Demand has been such that, while the official on-sale date is May 1, the first allocation has already been reserved. Register now and it might be on your driveway by the autumn.
Its arrival here was in jeopardy for a while due to exchange rate issues which threatened to put the price out of reach for many. Those problems appear to have been resolved and now it carries a price tag of £28,995.
It is powered by a 2.5litre turbocharged version of Subaru’s horizontallyopposed four-cylinder Boxer engine which produces 300ps at 6,000rpm and 407Nm toque at 4,000rpm, linked to a short throw, quick-shift six-speed manual gearbox. In addition, the suspension is performance-tuned for a flat but comfortable ride and the new hydraulic steering system uses a quicker ratio and stiffer steering rack.
Inside, the new WRX STI boasts soft-touch materials, new STI dials, plus carboneffect and metal trim and there’s a new, smaller-diameter flat-bottomed steering wheel. Rear seat passengers have more leg room thanks to a 25mm increase in wheelbase.
