Speed of light... Lotus sheds weight to set the pace

Yorkshire Post - Motoring - - FRONT PAGE -

LOTUS ELISE has been around for a while. Since 1994, to be precise. And the hand-built sports car has won a place in the hearts of proper car enthusiasts.

But all has been quiet on the new car front for white a while. Never mind, here comes a new iteration: the Sprint edition.

It is lighter (by 41kg), smarter (thanks to a new front and rear) and better equipped. Not a new model but an in-depth upgrade which is expected to spark fresh interest in a car which offers supercar performance for sports car prices.

To date nearly 33,000 Elises have been hand built at Lotus’ famous Hethel factory.

Jean-Marc Gales, CEO, Group Lotus plc. said, “Once again, the Elise continues to redefine what is possible in terms of adding lightness to a sports car. Whilst other manufacturers try to keep pace with Lotus’ weight reduction achievements, we’ve raised the bar beyond their reach.”

This diet means it touches 60mph in 5.9 seconds and 4.1 seconds for the Elise Sprint and Elise Sprint 220 respectively.

Lotus understands the importance of engine note, and acoustic engineers have spent time altering the sound of the more powerful Elise Sport 220 and Elise Sprint 220 models.

Elise prices start at £32,300.
