Favourite son’s gift keeps on giving to new owners
Arden Croft, Queens Drive, Ilkley Price: £895,000 Contact: Dacre, Son and Hartley, Ilkley. Tel: 01943 600655, www.dacres.co.uk A FATHER’S favouritism is reflected in the architecture at Arden Croft.
The Bradford mill owner had the property built in 1897 for his beloved son and no expense was spared in the design, detail and décor.
It was, and still is, elegant and packed with beautiful features from the galleried reception hall and ornate fireplaces to the glass atrium that floods the centre of the house with light.
The property next door, which he created for his daughter, is smaller, less grand and a deliberate snub to his son-in-law.
Arden Croft’s present owner, Peter Paneli, says: “Apparently, he loathed his son-in-law and so while his son’s house faced his own home, Thorpe Hall, his daughter’s faced away from it and was smaller.”
Mr Paneli bought the house 14 years ago to accommodate his young family.
“We lived close by but needed somewhere bigger.
“As soon as I saw this house I fell in love with it.
“What struck me immediately were the view down the valley, the door and hall and it turned out to be a great house for children.”
With six bedrooms, a secret door and a beautiful staircase that the Panelis nicknamed “the Von Trapp staircase”, together with a location close to the moor, it served his family well.
“I’m only selling because the children have grown up. It’s a family home and it needs a family.”
Although Mr Paneli has updated and modernised the stunning property, much of it looks as it did when it was first built.
“No-one has messed about with it. There have been no extensions and additions and none of the features has been taken away.
“I think that’s really important and it means that the house retains its integrity,” he says.
The house has a reception hall, cloakroom, living room, dining room, family room, breakfast room, kitchen, utility room, two store rooms and a wine cellar.
On the first floor there is a galleried landing, master bedroom with en-suite, three further bedrooms and a house bathroom.
On the second floor there are two more bedrooms and an attic room.
Outside there is a double garage and garden.
“I adore this house,” says Mr Paneli. “I shall be heartbroken to leave.”
Elegant Arden Croft in Ilkley retains its original features.
