Garden grabbing rules crackdown
A crackdown on “garden grabbing” was announced this week. The Government has removed the “brownfield” classification on garden land making it more difficult to get planning permission to build on.
But although it will be welcome news for NIMBYs, Peter Dixon, director of planning at Savills Leeds, says: “If housing density levels fall as a result, the medium term effect will be to create a problem for housing supply. The effect of this change will mean that councils will treat houses in large grounds on the same basis as undeveloped greenfield land.
“That should give more emphasis to making full use of Previously Developed Land (PDL) opportunities.”
