Blacksmith James comes up with the goods

IT was his mother who inspired blacksmith James Morris to create this over-door canopy.

“She was always grumbling about getting wet outside her cottage as she searched for the key to open the door or somebody came in the rain with a delivery,” says award-winning designer James, who has his own forge in Terrington, deep in the North Yorkshire countryside.

With the listed stone cottage dating back to the 1560s – it used to be a drovers’ inn where shepherds would stop off for the night with their sheep and enjoy a drink or two – it wasn’t an easy dilemma to solve.

“A porch would have changed the whole look of the front of the house,” says James, 39, adding that planning permission might have been difficult to obtain.

“Then, of course, an off-thepeg plastic awning would have been completely out of keeping. The only option seemed to be to design something myself.”

What James came up with was this steel-sided canopy – which can be supplied in a powdercoat finish in any colour of choice – with a glass roof.

“The feedback my mother had was so amazing that I’ve decided to offer the canopy as a product through my business Sculpsteel,” says James.

The steel and glass door canopy comes in a standard size but can be adjusted to suit a customer’s individual requirements.

The price of £649 includes VAT and delivery in the UK.

Sculpsteel can supply canopies of any size, so contact James Morris direct on 01653 648033 to obtain a price.
