Win tickets for Kevin McCloud’s Grand Designs exhibition
WOULD-BE self-builders are no doubt delighted to see the new series of Grand Designs, that started on Wednesday on Channel 4.
Presenter Kevin McCloud says the recession has had a positive effect on the projects, which aren’t quite as flashy as some of those filmed previously.
A more “thoughtful approach” is being taken with concerns for the environment and innovation top of the agenda, rather than interior bling. The couple who kicked off the first programme in the series were designer Lincoln Miles and artist Lisa Traxler, who turned a 1970s bungalow in the woods on the Isle of Wight into a contemporary, timber-clad home complete with a tower.
Their budget was £180,00 after already paying £270,000 for the site. It took them three years to decide what to do, but they’ve obviously done a good job as this house is one of Kevin’s favourites in the new series.
Other projects include an energy-efficient house built into a hillside near More-ton-in-the-Marsh, which cost £600,000 to create and an eco house in Cornwall, which cost just £290,000 to build.
Now the finishing touches have been made to the TV series, ever busy Kevin is preparing for the latest Grand Designs exhibition in Birmingham, which runs from October 8 to the 10.
The exhibition is a mecca for anyone interested in property renovation or self-building.
This year, there are six different sections including the Grand Village, Grand Build, Grand Interiors, Grand Kitchens and Bathrooms, Grand Technology and Grand Gardens.
The show will also feature the latest must-have domestic technology, gadgets and gizmos and there is advice on everything from planning, finance, and design. There will be a number of seminars focusing on building issues, the latest in green technologies and home improvements.
