Live in it or let it, this house has prime position in Dales village
children when they saw Dale House in Malham.
“We were the first to view the house and we loved it. The location was brilliant. It’s in the centre of the village but it is set back, so it is private and peaceful.”
It needed some modernisation, though more than they anticipated.
“We ended up moving out for four months when we realised it needed a full rewire and we thought then that we may as well replace the plumbing and the bathrooms. We’ve also done the roof,” says Nicola, who owns the Lingerie Room in Settle.
She oversaw the work, while Mike, a building services engineer was busy with his Leeds-based company Silcock Leedham.
The house has 2,800sq ft of space and a wealth of original features, including period fireplaces with wood-burning stoves, sliding timber sash windows with painted timber shutters, stripped oak flooring and stained glass windows.
On the ground floor, it has an entrance hall, drawing room, dining room, breakfast kitchen with Aga, shower room, pantry, boot room and utility room.
On the first floor, there is a master bedroom suite, guest bedroom with ensuite shower, four further bedrooms and a house bathroom.
Outside, there is a gated, gravelled drive providing parking and a south-facing walled garden laid to lawn with views over surrounding countryside.
Although Nicola and Mike thought they would live in Malham forever, they were forced to re-think when they chose a Harrogate school for their daughters and Mike’s working days became longer.
“We decided to move to Harrogate to suit the stage of life we are at now, but we never anticipated it. We thought this was a house for life and we do miss it. It’s a great village with a lovely community,” says Nicola.
Dale House is now a successful holiday let, thanks to its ability to sleep up to 12 people in the six bedrooms. It is for rent through Rural Retreats.
“It’s been amazing. It’s been very popular as a holiday let as there aren’t many houses of that size around,” says Nicola.
“Whoever buys has the option to keep that going or they can use it, as we did, as a family home.”
