One in six homes is privately rented
NEARLY one in six homes is now a private rental property, as both home ownership and social housing decline.
The English Housing Survey from Communities and Local Government shows that the number of households renting privately has gone up by one million in the last five years and accounts for 15.6 per cent of all households in England, up from 14.2 per cent in 2008-09 and 11.7 per cent in 2005-06.
Couples with no dependent children are the most common type of household in the private rented sector (26 per cent), with one-person households under 60 being the second largest at 23 per cent. Lone parent households represent 12 per cent of private renters.
