Ombudsman’s record year
THE Property Ombudsman received a record number of complaints last year.
There were investigations into 1,330 complaints, split into 646 sales complaints and 672 lettings complaints, with the remainder relating to HIPs and leasehold management. The number of investigated complaints was 28 per cent higher than the previous peak in 2008, of 1,043.
Altogether, the Ombudsman’s office dealt with 13,599 initial inquiries, a six per cent increase on 2009. Some were outside his reference, leaving a total of 11,794 inquiries.
Of those that went on to be investigated, the majority of cases last year (79 per cent) were closed within 120 days.
