Om­buds­man’s record year

THE Prop­erty Om­buds­man re­ceived a record num­ber of com­plaints last year.

There were in­ves­ti­ga­tions into 1,330 com­plaints, split into 646 sales com­plaints and 672 let­tings com­plaints, with the re­main­der re­lat­ing to HIPs and lease­hold man­age­ment. The num­ber of in­ves­ti­gated com­plaints was 28 per cent higher than the pre­vi­ous peak in 2008, of 1,043.

Al­to­gether, the Om­buds­man’s of­fice dealt with 13,599 ini­tial in­quiries, a six per cent in­crease on 2009. Some were out­side his ref­er­ence, leav­ing a to­tal of 11,794 in­quiries.

Of those that went on to be in­ves­ti­gated, the ma­jor­ity of cases last year (79 per cent) were closed within 120 days.
