The prize-winning new house that is truly local
TERESA Scott and her partner, Dr Andrew McIntyre, have reaped the benefits of shopping local. Their new home has been created and furnished almost exclusively by builders, tradespeople and suppliers from Holmfirth and the surrounding area.
Their faith in local talent has paid off as the house has just won the Best Single Dwelling category in the recent LABC (Local Authority Building Control) Building Excellence Awards.
The property started life as a 1960s’ bungalow that made way for a 5,000 sq ft detached. It was designed and built by Yorkshire Country Properties Ltd, a small family business founded by Dudley and Carol Parker, which has been building in the Holme valley area for more than 40 years.
The five-bedroom house sits within large landscaped gardens in the rural village of Wooldale, just outside Holmfirth. It boasts sustainable features such as air-source heat pump and heat-recovery ventilation system together with a bespoke interior, designed and manufactured by Yorkshire County Properties’ team of joiners. They created a pippy oak kitchen, oak internal joinery throughout an impressive staircase, wardrobes and handmade furniture. The project took almost a year.
Teresa says: “We are thrilled with what we have got and I can’t praise Yorkshire Properties highly enough. They were brilliant even though it was difficult at times, especially over last winter when it was minus 15 up here.
“The quality of the workmanship is excellent and the costings were all worked out beforehand so we knew exactly what we would be paying. We used all local suppliers, including The Rug Shop in Holmfirth, for the carpets, and Frank Platts for all the appliances. The service you get locally is superb. You can’t buy that on the internet.”
Emma Hanks, Dudley and Carol’s daughter, says: “As you can imagine, we are very proud of our achievement, both for our team and also all the local tradesman that worked with us on the project.
“We not only built it, we made 99 per cent of the internal joinery, including the doors and architraves.”
Emma, an interior designer, and her sister, Claire, an architect, are set to take on more responsibility for the business as Dudley and Carol cut back to part-time.
“This award is a great semiretirement present,” says Dudley.
