Love conquers all... even a dream home with spectacular sea views
Jayne has grown and I’ve realised that my dream home isn’t hers. She’s very good and would happily live here with me but I know what she really wants is something in the country with room for goats and hens, so that’s what I’m going to look for.
“Selling it is a wrench, but it is just one of those things. Over the time it took to get planning and build this house, my life has moved on.”
Mike, who has tackled three self-build projects over the past 15 years, managed to buy the plot after other would-be buyers were scared off by the sloping site and the access.
“Logistically it was difficult. It required a lot of excavation and groundworks but thanks to my job and my building experience, I knew I could do it and I knew this was a rare opportunity,” says Mike.
The build took 18 months and went smoothly, though any amount of difficulty would’ve been worth the end result.
The four-bedroom house is just 200 metres from the beach and was designed to make the most of the sensational, panoramic views. The sitting room and the master bedroom both boast a terrace looking out to sea and to make sure it can be used in all weathers, Mike created a canopy.
“I can’t explain how wonderful it is to sit out on the terrace with a glass of wine looking out to sea. It’s even more amazing when there’s a storm out there and you can see the lightning,” he says.
His perfectionist streak meant that the build cost about 25 per cent more than he initially budgeted for. All the nails, screws and balustrading are marinegrade stainless steel, the joinery is solid oak, all the floors are solid concrete and the kitchen units are from German manufacturer Hacker.
The house is accessed via an electric sliding gate onto a driveway and gardens.
Inside, there is an entrance hall, dining room, sitting room with terrace, kitchen/breakfst room, a master bedroom with en-suite and roof terrace, a guest bedroom with en-suite, two further bedrooms, a house bathroom, utility room, basement shower room, workshop/office and integral garage. The basement area could make an annexe, subject to the necessary consents.
