Home in the village for those with a love of steam engines
incredible and I am a steam enthusiast. You can see the North Yorkshire Moors Railway track for a mile from the conservatory.”
The old farmhouse had been extended in the 1970s to create more space for guest house accommodation.
“We ran it as a guest house for five years and really enjoyed that,” says David. “We’d often have members of the crew on Heartbeat staying here but in 2007 we wanted to take early retirement and so we sold off half the property and kept the original part.”
Barnet House is still a sizeable property and the accommodation is arranged over three floors.
It includes an entrance hall, cloakroom, utility room and contemporary timber kitchen with Stoves range-style cooker. There are four bedrooms, one with en-suite, and a family bathroom.
The sitting room leads through double doors to a large conservatory which has far-reaching views across countryside.
Outside, the property, which sits in an elevated position, is approached along a private drive and has gardens to three sides. These are laid largely to lawn with mature trees interspersed with stone terraced seating areas and there is a timber summer house to the front. A gravelled parking and turning area leads to the rear of the property with uninterrupted views across the moors and beyond.
Although the house is in the heart of the village, David says it is tucked away and quiet even at the height of the tourist season when visitors flock into the area.
Goathland is situated in the North York Moors National Park and is best known as the setting for the fictional village of Aidensfield, in the Heartbeat television series.
Goathland railway station is the home of the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway and has featured in a host of TV programmes and films, including the Harry Potter series, where it serves as Hogsmead station.
The village itself has many amenities and is a short drive from Whitby and the market town of Pickering.
David says: “I’m sad to leave and I just hope it sells to someone who loves it as much as we did. It is a wonderful place.”
