IF you are planning a winter break take action now to make sure a pipe doesn’t burst if there’s a cold snap

The Heating Helpline (www. heatinghelpline.org.uk) has a host of tips including not turning off your heating altogether. It’s best to keep your heating on low – about 10ºc / 50ºf.

If you haven’t already got one, consider having a programmable thermostat fitted. These give you control over your heating and usually have a holiday setting. Make sure all pipes are insulated with preformed insulation.

Replace washers on dripping taps because if the taps freeze the pipe will become blocked. If you’re leaving house keys with a friend make sure they know where your inside stop tap is.
