Challenge to meet carbon cut targets

EVERY domestic and commercial building in the UK will need a tailored low carbon energy makeover to meet carbon reduction targets of 80 per cent by 2050, according to a report by The Centre for Low Carbon Futures and the Energy Saving Trust.

Given the number of buildings, this will mean improving one every minute and making sure the improvements are done right first time. Buildings are responsible for 45 per cent of emissions.

Fraser Winterbottom, EST’S chief operating officer, says: “The UK has some of the oldest, leakiest housing in Europe, and naturally, this makes the wholesale retrofit we urgently need a considerable challenge.”
