Self-build groups get £30m boost

HOUS­ING min­is­ter Grant Shapps has an­nounced a new £30m fund for self-build groups that will help them to part-fund land and de­vel­op­ment costs.

He has also an­nounced that TV pre­sen­ter and bet­ter homes cam­paigner Kevin Mccloud has been ap­pointed by the Na­tional Self Build As­so­ci­a­tion as an in­dus­try cham­pion.

Self-build groups will soon be able to bid for Gov­ern­ment loans to part-fund land ac­qui­si­tion and early de­vel­op­ment costs with the money be­ing re­paid on com­ple­tion of the project. Mr Mccloud is also com­ing up with ideas to help those want­ing to cre­ate grand designs. He sug­gests large-scale de­vel­op­ers pro­vide fin­ished-slab, fully-ser­viced sites for in­di­vid­ual home­builders.
