Surveyor warns of chemical rip-off

Yorkshire Post - Property - - PROPERTY -

CHARTERED surveyor Ian Rock, author of the new Haynes Period Property Manual, says home owners are at risk of being ripped off by contractors who sell chemical damp proof courses for historic buildings.

He says that most damp problems in older properties can be fixed by routine maintenance that will gradually help the building to dry out.

Chemical DPCs and cementbased renders risk trapping moisture in the walls.

He says: “Old houses need to breath, so by clearing away earth that is building up against outside walls, applying traditional lime-based mortars and mending leaking drains you can solve many damp problems over time.”
