Smaller builders offer fewer jobs

JOB prospects for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the construction sector are continuing to deteriorate, according to the latest state of trade survey from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), the UK’s largest construction trade association.

The survey, the only one of its kind looking at construction SMEs, reveals that in the second quarter of 2012, fewer jobs were reported by more than a third of builders (37 per cent) and the outlook is little better with 30 per cent of construction SMEs expecting to employ fewer people over the next six months.

FMB chief executive Brian Berry said the results were “particularly depressing”.
