WHEN Waitrose opened in the Mean­wood area of Leeds, res­i­dents basked in the re­flected glory.

The su­per­mar­ket beloved of the mid­dle classes did its home­work and clearly thought that Mean­wood was “worth it” and had iden­ti­fied the area as up-and-com­ing.

Other in­di­ca­tors of gen­tri­fi­ca­tion in­clude the open­ing of a Sains­bury’s or a Booths.

New cof­fee shops, delis, bars, restau­rants and up­mar­ket hair­dressers are a clear sign that money is mov­ing into the area.

De­vel­op­ers are ex­perts at spot­ting po­ten­tial so if they start tar­get­ing sites in your neigh­bour­hood then it shows they have con­fi­dence in it.
