Rogue agents are ‘abusing trust’

AN award-winning Yorkshire letting agent has called for the industry to be licensed.

Luke Gidney, director of LetLeeds, says rogue agents are abusing the trust put in them by landlords and tenants.

He says: “No letting agency is perfect and there can be misunderstandings. But there is a big difference between human error and instances were people’s rent money and deposits disappear.

“At present, there is no way to stop anyone setting themselves up as a letting agent or prevent previously liquidated agents returning to the business. The scary thing is that anyone can claim to be a letting agent and start taking fees.”
