Clever use of space that gave old cottage a sensational new look

with contemporary cupboards from Ikea, which he topped with a stainless steel worktop.

On a blocked-up fireplace at the other side of the room, he positioned a floating shelf for his favourite David Hockney prints.

In the adjoining lounge, the front door led straight into the room but John designed a bi-folding door stretching from floor to ceiling to screen off an entrance area. It also keeps out any icy draughts in winter.

On the first floor, the suspended ceiling was ripped out to reveal another one-anda-half feet of space, old 1960s doors were replaced with rustic shed doors from B&Q, which look perfect and came at a cut-price.

The tiny house bathroom was turned into a useful laundry room. A former bedroom is now a spacious Jack and Jill bathroom, which boasts a stylish double sink from Bathstore and has access to both the landing and the master bedroom.

The second floor has a multifunctional space that acts as a study and “chill out space” and the other double bedroom is a guest suite.

Its piece de resistance is a partial wall in the middle of the room that acts as a headboard for the bed, while behind it is a carefully hidden, compact shower room.

“I get ideas from hotels , restaurants and shops,” says John, who has a degree in graphic design.

“When friends ask if I enjoyed a restaurant, I tend to tell them about the décor rather than the food. I am obsessed.”

He is also very well organised, which meant the project was finished on time, though the budget was stretched by another £10,000 thanks to some special touches.

The extra spend was well worth it and helped fund a new lighting scheme with tracks, directional spots and task lights, all on dimmers, in convenient places, including one within reach of the bed

John also commissioned cabinet maker Danny Blakey to make some bespoke furniture for the cottage.

The overall result is a triumph and one applauded by fellow interiors enthusiasts from Living Etc. magazine’s website forum.

“I went on the forum to ask where to source a geometric throw and I posted some photos of the house. Next thing I knew I was House of the Month, which was lovely,” says John
