Shelter is highlighting the issue one year on since tenancy deposit protection law was improved to ensure greater protection for tenants. The housing charity is encouraging people to check their landlord has put the money in one of the government-backed schemes within 30 days of receiving it, as is now required by law.
Shelter’s research also reveals the rising cost of deposits, which average £992. Seven per cent of tenants were forced to take out credit last year to pay for the deposit.
