Contact: Hunters, Ilkley, tel: 01942 660500 www.huntersexclusive.co.uk WHEN Lancastrian Russell Mellor decided to fulfil an ambition to buy a country home in Yorkshire, he and his wife Debbie did plenty of homework before finally settling on a barn in the picturesque village of Timble.

“We looked all over the Dales and in Ilkley and we came across this barn, which had beautiful views. The first thing I did was go to the local pub to ask about the builder who was converting it,” says Russell, who bought the property 18 years go.

The feedback was positive. Gordon Manson’s work was widely respected and he was happy to work with the Mellors to create their dream home.

“It was the perfect spot for us. I was about to retire and am keen on walking. This area is fantastic for walkers and it also has a great community,” says Russell. The area has also provided inspiration for his paintings. He did a degree in art after retiring and has since shown his work in galleries and exhibitions. He now has a studio next to the barn.

“I was at a loss when I retired and I wasn’t interested in hitting golf balls about so my daughter suggested I go back to university and do a degree. I get a lot of inspiration from the countryside here and I especially enjoy walking in the woods.”

Sourby Lodge is set in two acres of south-facing landscaped gardens and boasts far reaching northerly views to Thruscross Reservoir towards Nidderdale and spectacular southerly views down the valley to Swinsty Reservoir. Its flexible living accommodation is arranged over three floors with a hallway, utility room, four reception rooms, one is currently being used as a home study. Two bedrooms, both with en-suite, are also on the ground floor with an additional three bedrooms with bathroom to the first floor. Reclaimed oak beams and parquet flooring dating back over 100 years, along with exposed stone feature walls are just a few of the features.

Outside at the front there is a driveway and lawn. To the rear of the property is a patio area with built-in bespoke stone dining table and a lawn. Outbuildings
