Portrait of a perfect country conversion
Sourby Lodge, Timble, near Otley. Price: £950,000. Contact: Hunters, Ilkley, tel: 01942 660500 www.huntersexclusive.co.uk WHEN Lancastrian Russell Mellor decided to fulfil an ambition to buy a country home in Yorkshire, he and his wife Debbie did plenty of homework before finally settling on a barn in the picturesque village of Timble.
“We looked all over the Dales and in Ilkley and we came across this barn, which had beautiful views. The first thing I did was go to the local pub to ask about the builder who was converting it,” says Russell, who bought the property 18 years go.
The feedback was positive. Gordon Manson’s work was widely respected and he was happy to work with the Mellors to create their dream home.
“It was the perfect spot for us. I was about to retire and am keen on walking. This area is fantastic for walkers and it also has a great community,” says Russell. The area has also provided inspiration for his paintings. He did a degree in art after retiring and has since shown his work in galleries and exhibitions. He now has a studio next to the barn.
“I was at a loss when I retired and I wasn’t interested in hitting golf balls about so my daughter suggested I go back to university and do a degree. I get a lot of inspiration from the countryside here and I especially enjoy walking in the woods.”
