WENTWORTH: The sold sign went up on Wentworth Woodhouse this week. The Grade I-listed property, near Rotherham, is the largest house in Britain and was on the market for £7m with Savills. Said to have inspired Jane Austen’s Pemberley, it has been bought by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust and comes with a £42 million restoration bill. Its previous owner, the late Clifford Newbold, devoted his final years to saving the house. Crispin Holborow of Savills commended his work and quoted a Greek proverb: “A society grows when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they will never sit’.”
