Leeds make up for 2010 title setback
Leeds City regained their Northern Six Stage Road Relay title in Warrington, regaining the title they lost there last year.
Following three successive wins, they were left disappointed in 2010, but made no mistake this time and were handed the perfect start when James Smith (17:47) led the field home on the opening stage with a splendid run. The Leeds squad then gave way to Morpeth on the second stage where Christopher Wright ran 18:49 and lost further ground on stage three where veteran Martin Roscoe clocked 19:19.
Simon Deakin (17:58) closed to within three seconds of Morpeth on stage four and, with James Walsh and James Wilkinson to come, the title looked a certainty for Leeds. So it proved although Morpeth had two strong runners to finish and pushed Leeds all the way. Walsh ran 17:28 and Wilkinson 17:19 which was the second fastest time of the race.
Defending champions Derby finished third while the Leeds B team, in 16th place, qualified for the National Road Relay.
In the women’s four-stage relay – won by Morpeth – Bingley were the leading Yorkshire team in fifth place.
