Ashworth recovers to settle for second

Yorkshire Post - Sports Monday - - Sport -

Home star Ricky Ashworth took second place on the rostrum at one of speedway’s biggest nights of the year at Sheffield, the Premier League Riders’ Championship – despite picking himself up from a crash which nearly ruined his chances.

After scorching to three straight wins in his qualifying heats, he looked down and out when he fell heavily in his fourth outing, slamming into the Owlerton safety fence.

But the Sheffield Tigers ace picked himself up to make sure of a place in the grand final by winning his final outing.

In the shoot-out, Ashworth lined up against England international Ben Barker, Kauko Nieminen and Sam Masters, but made a bad start as Somerset’s form man Masters shot from the tapes to win, although Ashworth – winner of the title two years ago – did battle his way through to second to take some consolation.

Sheffield’s Shane Parker, the pre-meeting favourite, had a bad night, carding only eight points.
