Deignan places second in Liege
CYCLING: Otley’s Lizzie Deignan took second place behind dominant Dutchwoman Anna van der Breggen in the inaugural edition of Liege-Bastogne-Liege Femmes race.
Deignan saw her BoelsDolmans team-mate clinch her third victory of the week after successes in the Amstel Gold Race and La Fleche Wallonne.
Van der Breggen finished the hilly 135km course in 3hrs 42mins 17secs, with Deignan holding off Pole Katarzyna Niewiadoma to take second place, 17 seconds behind.
Deignan said: “I have ridden beyond expectations this week. Anna is a great champion, team-mate, and we have had an amazing team performance this week. We have showcased what women’s cycling is all about.”
In a men’s race overshadowed by the death of Italian rider Michele Scarponi, who died in a training accident on Saturday, Spain’s Alejandro Valverde beat Ireland’s Dan Martin in a sprint finish to take victory.
