Deignan places sec­ond in Liege

CY­CLING: Ot­ley’s Lizzie Deignan took sec­ond place be­hind dom­i­nant Dutch­woman Anna van der Breggen in the in­au­gu­ral edi­tion of Liege-Bas­togne-Liege Femmes race.

Deignan saw her Boel­sDol­mans team-mate clinch her third vic­tory of the week af­ter suc­cesses in the Am­s­tel Gold Race and La Fleche Wal­lonne.

Van der Breggen fin­ished the hilly 135km course in 3hrs 42mins 17secs, with Deignan hold­ing off Pole Katarzyna Niewiadoma to take sec­ond place, 17 sec­onds be­hind.

Deignan said: “I have rid­den be­yond ex­pec­ta­tions this week. Anna is a great cham­pion, team-mate, and we have had an amaz­ing team per­for­mance this week. We have show­cased what women’s cy­cling is all about.”

In a men’s race over­shad­owed by the death of Ital­ian rider Michele Scar­poni, who died in a train­ing ac­ci­dent on Satur­day, Spain’s Ale­jan­dro Valverde beat Ire­land’s Dan Martin in a sprint fin­ish to take vic­tory.
