Gullen at the double on eve of nationals
CYCLING: Leeds rider James Gullen gave his hopes of claiming the National 10mile Championship title next weekend a huge boost after he powered to two impressive wins in as many days.
The 27-year-old JLT Condor man won the Team Swift 10 near South Cave in 16:59 yesterday – the second fastest time on record – and 48 seconds faster than his nearest rival.
Twenty four hours earlier, Gullen earned a win and course record in the Scarborough Paragon 10 near Grindale.
As pre-race favourite Gullen will be the last rider to get underway at the National Championships in Cumbria on Sunday, where he will be hoping to improve on second last year.
In the women’s event, York’s Fiona Sharp claimed victory for York Cycleworks. The 38-year-old posted a time of 25:50 to record a 52-second winning margin over promising junior Hannah Bayes from Scarborough.
