Gullen at the dou­ble on eve of na­tion­als

CY­CLING: Leeds rider James Gullen gave his hopes of claim­ing the Na­tional 10mile Cham­pi­onship ti­tle next week­end a huge boost af­ter he pow­ered to two im­pres­sive wins in as many days.

The 27-year-old JLT Con­dor man won the Team Swift 10 near South Cave in 16:59 yes­ter­day – the sec­ond fastest time on record – and 48 sec­onds faster than his near­est ri­val.

Twenty four hours ear­lier, Gullen earned a win and course record in the Scar­bor­ough Paragon 10 near Grindale.

As pre-race favourite Gullen will be the last rider to get un­der­way at the Na­tional Cham­pi­onships in Cum­bria on Sun­day, where he will be hop­ing to im­prove on sec­ond last year.

In the women’s event, York’s Fiona Sharp claimed vic­tory for York Cy­cle­works. The 38-year-old posted a time of 25:50 to record a 52-sec­ond win­ning mar­gin over promis­ing ju­nior Han­nah Bayes from Scar­bor­ough.
