France edge win in ‘scrappy’ game

Yorkshire Post - Sports Monday - - FOOTBALL -

WORLD CUP: France coach Didier Deschamps said his side must do better after they edged closer to qualification with a 1-0 win over Bulgaria in Sofia.

Blaise Matuidi’s early goal was enough to send France back to the top of Group A and keep their Russia 2018 hopes in their own hands.

But Deschamps admitted his side’s performance had been “laborious” at times and said they needed to be more clinical against Belarus tomorow in Paris to finish the job.

“We started very well in the first half by scoring early and having the opportunity to get a second goal,” Deschamps said.

“The second half was more laborious. It was a fight, and it is true that we must be able to do better, to keep the ball. Bulgaria were very aggressive. We responded in the fight, but it was a scrappy game.”
