Yorkshire Post - Sports Monday - - RUGBY UNION -

GOLF: English Boys’ County Champion of Champions Ben Schmidt, of Rotherham, is among six players selected for the England team for the Under-16 international against Ireland at Limerick on October 13-14, writes Chris Stratford.

His team-mates are British boys’ champion Conor Gough (Stoke Park), Dubai-based Josh Hill, Max Hopkins (Bishops Stortford), George Leigh (Trevose) and Ben Pierleoni (Berkhamsted).

Schmidt has enjoyed a stellar season that, as well as victory in the Boys’ Champion of Champions event, has seen him become the youngest winner of the prestigious Lee Westwood Trophy.

He has just completed an English team double having been part of both Yorkshire’s men’s and boys’ squads triumphs in the national county team championships.

Schmidt played a vital role on Saturday in the former when he turned around a three-hole deficit at the turn to bring home the full point and secure a 5-4 win over Berks, Bucks & Oxon.

“I lost both my matches (on Friday) and I went into the back nine thinking, ‘I really don’t want to lose another one’,” said Schmidt, who nervelessly holed a downhill, breaking putt from six feet on the last to win.
