Euro gold for Leeds teenager Pidcock
CYCLING: Leeds cycling ace Thomas Pidcock powered to victory in the European Under-23 Cyclo-Cross Championship gold in the Netherlands.
The 19-year-old pro rider from Kippax added another major victory to his young career in Rosmulen, taking victory in the race ahead of rival Eli Iserbyt of Belgium with a time of 50-22.
He was one of a strong British contingent in the Netherlands with fellow Yorkshireman Ben Turner also impressing on his way to fourth, but the 19-yearold from Doncaster could not find that extra push to claw 17 seconds back on third-placed Frenchman Antoine Benoist.
Barnsley’s Jenson Young was in action in the junior class but could not mount a challenge on the major placings, eventually finishing around three minutes down on Pim Ronhaar’s leading pace down in 33rd.
Elsewhere, round seven of the Yorkshire Cyclo-Cross Points Series saw Matt Taylor (Albion Cycles) come out on top in comfortable fashion.
The Halifax-based rider took the lead after the first lap extended it to 1-14 upon crossing the line in 58-31.
Sophie Thackeray (PH-MAS Paul Milnes) of Keighley was on hand to take the women’s prize on the course in Skipton.
