Euro gold for Leeds teenager Pid­cock

CY­CLING: Leeds cy­cling ace Thomas Pid­cock pow­ered to vic­tory in the Eu­ro­pean Un­der-23 Cy­clo-Cross Cham­pi­onship gold in the Nether­lands.

The 19-year-old pro rider from Kip­pax added an­other ma­jor vic­tory to his young ca­reer in Ros­mulen, tak­ing vic­tory in the race ahead of ri­val Eli Iser­byt of Bel­gium with a time of 50-22.

He was one of a strong British con­tin­gent in the Nether­lands with fel­low York­shire­man Ben Turner also im­press­ing on his way to fourth, but the 19-yearold from Don­caster could not find that ex­tra push to claw 17 sec­onds back on third-placed French­man An­toine Benoist.

Barns­ley’s Jen­son Young was in ac­tion in the ju­nior class but could not mount a chal­lenge on the ma­jor plac­ings, even­tu­ally fin­ish­ing around three min­utes down on Pim Ron­haar’s lead­ing pace down in 33rd.

Else­where, round seven of the York­shire Cy­clo-Cross Points Se­ries saw Matt Tay­lor (Al­bion Cy­cles) come out on top in com­fort­able fash­ion.

The Hal­i­fax-based rider took the lead af­ter the first lap ex­tended it to 1-14 upon cross­ing the line in 58-31.

So­phie Thack­eray (PH-MAS Paul Milnes) of Keigh­ley was on hand to take the women’s prize on the course in Skip­ton.
