ONE of David Hockney’s most iconic subjects – the swimming pool – surfaced at a major post-war and contemporary art sale at Christie’s in London. Gregory in the Pool (Paper Pool 4), which depicts the Yorkshireman’s then assistant and companion, Gregory Evans, leaning on the side of a pool, fetched £482,500. The 1978 work is one of 20 such images rendered from hand-made pulped paper, a medium whose tactile, absorbent quality acted as a foil for the poolside waterscapes he sought to capture.
