On the grapevine

I am still ploughing my way through the huge number of Fiendish Wine

Quiz entries, and will announce the winner next week. I have been revitalised by the high quality of nitpicking this year and particularly appreciate the two pages of notes sent in by one reader who picked holes in several questions. One thing has surprised me. I set a trap in the Little George question that more than half the entrants fell into. If you expect a Burgundy-shaped bottle with a Pétrus (Bordeaux) label to sell for a very high price then this column needs to go back to basics for a while.

Martinez Wines in Ilkley is planning to re-start its informal evening tasting sessions, generally known as its Sipping Society. They will run on the second Wednesday of the month, starting in March. Contact Philip on 01943 600000.

The ebullient, informative, great-fun speaker and world-class winemaker Ernst Loosen will be at Field & Fawcett in York on January 27 to present his Dr Loosen and Villa Wolf wines. A three-course dinner and tasting costs just £30. Ring 01904 489073 for details.
