The second round of the Four Nations Chess League took place at Northampton, Reading and Bolton. This column reviews the play of the Yorkshire teams in Divisions 1 and 2.
White Rose 1 were pitted against Guildford 1 and performed admirably, only losing 5-3 with highlights including Paul Townsend’s demolition of GM Mark Hebden and Sveltana Sucikova’s win over IM Sophie Milliet. On Sunday, they had a more realistic chance over Anglian Avengers 1. Wins for GM Colin McNab, IM James Adair, Iain Gourlay and a second win for Sucikova contributed to a 5.5-2.5 win for the Yorkshire side. They currently lie in second place in Division 1 Pool B.
In Division 2 White Rose 2 lost heavily to Spirit of Atticus A and Alba while Bradford DCA Knights A also lost both matches. Both Yorkshire sides will have to start winning some games if they want to avoid relegation.
