democratic accountability count for absolutely nothing if they clash with the interests of the European elite.
As UK citizens, we do not have a dog in this particular fight. It should be up to the Spanish and Catalan people – and no one else – to decide how they are governed. That is how democratic self-government works.
But, of course, this is entirely at odds with the autocratic EU and the increasing centralisation of power as part of an “ever closer union”.
The Spanish government may have a strong case against Catalonian secession and it should be allowed to put its argument to its people – although I would suggest clubbing citizens over the head
