demo­cratic ac­count­abil­ity count for ab­so­lutely noth­ing if they clash with the in­ter­ests of the Euro­pean elite.

As UK ci­ti­zens, we do not have a dog in this par­tic­u­lar fight. It should be up to the Spanish and Cata­lan peo­ple – and no one else – to de­cide how they are gov­erned. That is how demo­cratic self-govern­ment works.

But, of course, this is en­tirely at odds with the au­to­cratic EU and the in­creas­ing cen­tral­i­sa­tion of power as part of an “ever closer union”.

The Spanish govern­ment may have a strong case against Cat­alo­nian se­ces­sion and it should be al­lowed to put its ar­gu­ment to its peo­ple – although I would sug­gest club­bing ci­ti­zens over the head
