Old Town building ‘in need of attention’

-

A DEVELOPER has completed its latest acquisition in Hull – the council-owned Danish Buildings in the city’s Old Town.

Work is under way to turn more than 20 offices in the building, which is in a prominent location next to Scale Lane Bridge, into space for emerging creative individuals and businesses.

The side of the building acted as a screen for one of the projections which kicked off the city’s UK City of Culture year and is opposite Ye Olde Black Boy pub. It includes the Grade II-listed Bayles House, which was built in the late 17th century.

Andy Allenby, the contracts manager with developer Allenby Commercial, said the building was “screaming out for some love and attention”.

He added: “We will put in another entrance door at the back, facing the river, and we will open up other parts of the building to provide managed workspace for creative businesses.”

The building is about 40 per cent let, including to some of the City of Culture team. The acquisition is just the latest for Allenby Commercial, which has bought the city’s historic Paragon Arcade and turned vacant units alongside Hull Minster into the Hideout Apartment Hotel.

Mr Allenby said it would put them in a perfect location for the next stage of the city’s development, adding: “It’s no secret that City of Culture is attracting more investment into Hull. Many people are now wondering what is next and with the Heritage Action Zone scheme and the maritime heritage project there’s a sense that things are just beginning.”
