Rape charge brought after 30 years

OFFICERS FROM Cleveland and North Yorkshire’s Cold Case Investigation Team have charged a 53-year-old man with a rape that happened in York almost 30 years ago.

The victim was 27 at the time of the attack in the Castlegate area of the city on October 29, 1988. She is receiving support from specialist officers as the case progresses.

The man, from Goole, will appear at York Magistrates’ Court today.

Det Insp Steve Menzies, who is leading the investigation, said: “This investigation follows a significant amount of work conducted by our collaborative Cold Case Investigation Team.

“With advances in forensic science and other investigation techniques, we are determined to bring offenders to justice. Importantly, we also aim to bring some form of comfort and closure to the victims of serious crimes.”
