Visitors take pot luck amid town’s quirky fun festival
HEAD DOWN to Settle over the summer and you could find yourself confronted with a dinosaur, an elephant or even the Queen sitting with a loyal corgi.
Because more than 150 weird and wonderful creations have sprung up across the town for the third Flowerpot Festival.
It has been organised by the Vibrant Settle Community Partnership, after chairman Steve Amphlett was inspired by a memory of a similar event in the West Country. “The first year, we thought we’d get perhaps 10 or 15 flowerpots, but it just went viral, and now in the first few weeks of this year’s festival we’ve already have more than 150 across the town,” he said.
“All parts of the community get involved and there’s so much pleasure in it, from children walking around with smiles on their faces after discovering another, to the businesses and residents who decide to come up with a design after realising they are the only ones on their street without one.
“It’s not high art, it’s fun, but there is a serious intent and that is to drive visitors into Settle.”
The festival runs throughout July and August and is free. Trail guides are available from the Tourist Information Centre and other outlets for £1.
