In Portugal the rooster is considered a sign of good luck, and images of brightly coloured cockerels are found everywhere. There are many versions of the legend, which tells of a pilgrim wrongly convicted of stealing and condemned to death. His last request was to speak once more to the judge who had sentenced him. The judge was hosting a banquet at which a roasted cockerel was being served, and the pilgrim declared that God would cause the bird to crow if he was innocent. To everyone’s amazement, the rooster stood up on the plate and crowed loudly. The judge declared this was a sign that we should not be quick to judge our fellow man, and that the rooster would be a symbol of honesty, trust and honour in Portugal forever more.
