Eggs on the up
It is not always the hens that you think will be the best layers in the winter that actually are the best. I have found that my hens that go broody a lot in the late spring and summer have laid rather well this winter. This is, I think, because they have laid less eggs overall in the year and therefore keep laying on and off through the winter; they are also of course still trying to go broody but are not adventurous with their choice of nest, so it is not too difficult to find their eggs!
After we have the shortest day in December laying always picks up even though daylight is still at a premium.
