The bright sur­face gloss seen on black plumage is known as sheen. This gloss can also be wit­nessed in other colours of plumage. How­ever it usu­ally re­ferred to as lus­tre in those

in­stances. This buffed look of the plumage can of­ten be achieved through rub­bing the bird down prior to pen­ning with a silk cloth or ma­te­rial sim­i­lar to that used for clean­ing glass and spec­ta­cles.
