Judges are actively encouraged to continually develop their judge skills and knowledge of the breeds. This is to ensure breeders engage in continuing stock improvements to meet the tighter standards of judging. Judges also seek to achieve a level of uniformity in assessing the suitability of the exhibits for the breeding pen, and to penalise any defects that detract from elements of the breed standards that may be regarded as the highest merit in the breed. The aim is to make show-pens reliable shop windows to anyone wishing purchase a breed.
