Your Chickens - - Contents - Simon McEwan, Editor

We like to think that Your Chickens is a ‘broad church’, relevant to the experienced hen keeper as well as the complete novice. That is hopefully reflected in this issue.

The first feature, about pure breeds and how best to breed from them, is very much aimed at the more dedicated hen keeper who is perhaps moving on from hybrids and becoming a bit more adventurous.

The author, Grant Brereton, says: “There comes a point for many of us when we get switched on to the idea of breeding our own pure-breed poultry, which is highly addictive, and often our beloved hybrids get phased out over time.”

At the other end of the scale, we feature a beginner who was delighted to embark on her adventure with ex-battery hens. Lizzy Page, from Stratford-uponAvon, stepped in when a friend told her 4,000 battery hens were due to be slaughtered nearby. She saved four of them, and hasn’t looked back since. “It wasn’t long before the chickens started to feel like part of the family,” said Lizzy.

Whether you are an experienced hen keeper or a novice, we hope you enjoy this issue of Your Chickens!
