QIs imprinting instantaneous? A

Andy Cawthray said: No, imprinting doesn’t occur instantly (thankfully otherwise I would have a lot of chickens following me around everywhere I go). It occurs over a period of several hours after hatching. Also, as chicks develop a preference for one type of object or animal, they become less able to imprint on any other form of stimuli. This does of course only occur if there is a suitable form of stimulus available otherwise the chick will hold out. In a nutshell the time taken to imprint varies according to the nature of their experiences and interactions with the objects or animals around them.
